The Official Roster of Chicago Salsa Musicians

Over the years there were many musicians that played a role in Chicago’s salsa history. Unfortunately, too many have been forgotten. In their honor we owe it to them to let everyone know who they were. In an effort to recognize those musicians, we would like to post a roster here of all Chicago salsa musicians - both past and present. For this we need your help. I can start the list with the names of some of those I remember but will need your help to make the list complete. Again, help us recognize them for their influence in molding Chicago’s salsa scene. Please feel free to add any names to the list so that everyone will know who they were or still are. Thanks.

David Rodriguez also played with Tipica Leal '79, as did Richie Pillot. Caribe used to call Rodriguez "Fat David" to distinguish from the other David in the group. I always thought that was kind of embarrassing.

Is there a way to get contact information for some of the artists listed?

Although some have passed on, many others are still around. Some are on Facebook and others have left the state but I don't know about the rest.

It was great to find your web site. I was fortunate enough to meet and play with some of the musicians on your list back in the 90's. It was from these great musicians that I learned about Latin music. Anyway, you should include Joe Frau on your list. There's no one quite like him as both a percussionist and coro singer.

Hello,

My father Hector L Rodriguez was a percussionist and was part of Tipica '78, La Confidencia, La Nuestra, La Natural and many many more.
