Vic Parra / Mambo Express

In an earlier post Vic Parra was mentioned as being one of the pioneers of the Latin Scene during the 1970s. He was instrumental in moving salsa forward through his popular "Mambo Express" radio program. At the time, Vic Parra also had a popular Charanga band that had a respectable sound and played many of the clubs and jazz venues.  After writing that post I started to wonder what ever happened to Vic Parra and if he was still doing his thing. I was happy to find that Vic Parra is still doing the radio program and still has a band. If anyone wants to find out more Vic's website can be found at the following link: http://www.mamboexpress5.com/

Wow, I remember Victor Parra from waaay back when he had a segment called "Vic's Picks" on Juan Montenegro's "Latin Explosion" show on WOJO, where he'd always play a nice old-school salsa number. This was before Parra got his own show, "Mambo Express," on WBEZ.

I enjoyed his show as well. His collection of recordings were an education for those who wanted to dig a little deeper into the origins of the mambo, charanga, guaguanco and many of the other Latin styles. His "Charanga" combo was also top notch. At the time, he was the only one doing it.

Come to think of it, I remember that Victor Parra used to work at Rose Records. He was always willing to stop and talk about the music.

I also remember, in my quest for salsa, listening to WTAQ (1300am, La Grange) and WEAW (1330am, Evanston).
